Edmund Hillary

Ed, as he liked to be called, He was born in Auckland in 1919 and he grew up in Tuakau. His Dad was a beekeeper. Edmund was small, shy, lonely and bullied. When he was 16 he went to Mt Ruapehu on a school trip. That was the first time that he saw a snow. To become stronger he took up wrestling. He discovered he had mental strength.Edmund was part of the !953 British team led by britisher John Hunt trying to climb Mt Everest.. When he was Knighted, he said it was for the whole team.Edmund continue climb mountains. IN 1985 he followed Robert Scott's route in Antarrica and led a team riding tractors to the south pole. In 1960 he took part in an expedition to look for the Abominable Snowman. Emund died in 2008
